ISO 14001:2026 was published on April 15, 2026. ISO 9001:2026 is in its final approval stage and expected in October. Good news: both bring moderate changes with clearer guidance—not a revolution of your management systems.
DNV describes them as “moderate changes, less extensive than transitioning to the 2015 editions.”1 ISO Secretary-General Sergio Mujica says of ISO 14001:2026: “The new edition is smoother to implement and integrates seamlessly with other ISO management system standards.”2
What actually changes?
- The 2024 climate amendments are now integrated into both standards (clauses 4.1 and 4.2)
- ISO 9001 adds quality culture and ethical behavior as explicit requirements in clause 5.1
- Clause 6.1 is restructured with clearer separation of risks and opportunities
- ISO 14001 adds a new clause 6.3 for structured management of change
- Annex A is substantially expanded with better guidance for both standards
- Stronger emphasis on climate, biodiversity, and resource efficiency in ISO 14001
What does not change?
- The core structure of both standards remains the same
- Your existing processes and documentation work as a foundation
- The fundamental principles of quality and environmental management are unchanged
Already certified? The transition will be smooth. Your existing processes and documentation serve as the foundation—you build on them, not from scratch.
AmpliFlow and the transition
For existing AmpliFlow users, the transition will be smooth. Your processes and documentation are already in the system. We have reviewed the changes in ISO 14001:2026 and the FDIS draft for ISO 9001:2026, and the tool will be updated to cover the new requirements.

Timeline and Transition
Managing more than ISO 9001 or 14001? A broader revision wave is underway. See the overview of all four standards for the full timeline.
Status April 2026:
- ISO 14001:2026: Published April 15, 2026.3 36 pages, edition 4. Replaces ISO 14001:2015 and the 2024 climate amendment, both withdrawn the same day.
- ISO 9001:2026: FDIS registered April 20, 2026.4 Final ballot in progress. Expected publication October 2026.
- ISO 14001 transition: Certificates under the 2015 edition must transition by May 2029 (3 years).5
- ISO 9001 transition: IAF will set the period after publication. DNV warns it may be shorter than three years due to the limited changes.6
Practical timeline:
- Now: ISO 14001:2026 is available for purchase. Start your gap analysis against the new edition.
- Fall 2026: ISO 9001:2026 is published. Same type of review as for 14001.
- 2026-2029: Plan certification audits against the new versions in consultation with your certification body.
ISO 14001:2026 - What Changed?
ISO describes ISO 14001:2026 as a clearer structure with easier navigation. The core remains the same—environmental management within the proven framework.
One main principle has been to clarify existing requirements while limiting new ones. Another goal has been to align with ISO’s Harmonized Structure (HLS), making it easier to combine with other standards.
Climate and environment in context analysis (clauses 4.1-4.2)
The 2024 climate amendment is now built into the main standard. But it has expanded—organizations must now also consider other environmental conditions such as resource use, pollution levels, and biodiversity.7
In AmpliFlow, use Stakeholder Analysis to identify parties affected by these factors and SWOT to assess risks and opportunities.
Risks and opportunities restructured (clause 6.1)
Clause 6.1 has a new structure. Text from 6.1.1 has moved to a new clause 6.1.4 “Risks and opportunities.” “Planning of actions” has been renumbered to 6.1.5.
In practice, review how you document risks and opportunities today. AmpliFlow’s Operational Risk Analysis and SWOT cover both aspects.
New clause 6.3 - Planning of changes
This is a completely new requirement: structured management of changes that affect the environmental management system.7 Previously implicit in other requirements, it now has its own clause.
Expanded operational control (clause 8.1)
Requirements have expanded from managing “outsourced processes” to covering “externally provided processes, products and services.”7 A broader perspective covering the entire value chain.
Improvement (clause 10)
Clauses have been consolidated and renumbered, but the content is largely the same.
Annex A
Substantially revised and improved. This is where the expanded guidance lives, making the standard easier to understand and apply.
BSI’s CEO on the changes
Susan Taylor Martin, CEO of BSI, says: “As environmental risks become more complex and interconnected, this revision represents far more than a routine update. It is a major step forward, strengthening governance, enhancing resilience, and aligning with emerging priorities such as climate change, biodiversity, and natural capital.”8
ISO 9001:2026 - What Is Expected to Change?
ISO 9001 is still in the FDIS stage. The changes are based on the DIS draft and are assessed as moderate by DNV.9
Clause 5: Quality culture and ethical behavior
The most visible new area. Management is now expected to actively promote quality culture and ethical behavior—not just document a policy.9
While this is new as an explicit requirement, DNV describes it as a moderate change. Many organizations already work with these issues through values and employee surveys.
In AmpliFlow, Objectives Management and Action Plans work for documenting culture goals and tracking results.
Clause 6: Clearer separation of risks and opportunities
Clause 6.1 is restructured with new subclauses 6.1.1-6.1.3 that separate risks from opportunities more clearly.9 This is a structural improvement—not a new requirement in substance, but documentation needs to reflect the separation.
In AmpliFlow, use Operational Risk Analysis for risk identification and SWOT to separate threats from opportunities.
Clause 10: Consolidated
Clause 10.1 has been consolidated from the 2015 version and now includes “connected guidance” referring to emerging technologies, digitalization, and reliable data.9
Annex A
Just like for ISO 14001, Annex A is significantly expanded with better guidance. This is the main quality improvement for practitioners applying the standard.
Climate amendments integrated
The 2024 climate amendments are now built into the standard’s core text, just like for ISO 14001. Organizations that already handled the amendment are ahead.
Transition Periods
ISO 14001:2026: certificates must transition by May 2029, giving three years.5
ISO 9001:2026: IAF will set the transition period when the standard is published. DNV notes the period may be shorter than three years because the changes are moderate.6
DNV recommends four steps for both standards:10
- Learn the changes in the revised standard
- Ensure relevant personnel are trained
- Identify gaps and plan implementation
- Implement actions and update your management system
AmpliFlow and ISO 2026
Since the changes are limited, you do not need to switch systems or wait for new features. AmpliFlow’s existing tools already cover what is new:
- Environmental and climate perspective: Stakeholder Analysis and SWOT for context analysis. Environmental Aspect Assessment with lifecycle perspective.
- Quality culture: Objectives Management and Action Plans for documenting and tracking culture work.
- Risk/opportunities: Operational Risk Analysis and SWOT for clear separation per the new clause structure.
- Change management: Projects, Action Plans, and Corrective Actions for structured handling (ISO 14001 clause 6.3).
- Value chain: Supplier Assessment for externally provided processes, products, and services.
Practical Preparations
The changes are limited, so focus on the right things:
- Review environmental and climate perspective - Have you included climate, biodiversity, and resource use in your context analysis for ISO 14001?
- Document quality culture work (ISO 9001) - How do you communicate and follow up on quality culture today? Link to measurable objectives.
- Review change management (ISO 14001) - Do you have a structured process for managing changes that affect the EMS? The new clause 6.3 requires this explicitly.
- Review value chain (ISO 14001) - Clause 8.1 now covers “externally provided” instead of just “outsourced” processes. Your documentation may need broadening.
- Talk to your certification body - Discuss the transition timeline and book a transition audit if needed.
Summary
ISO 14001:2026 was published April 15, 2026. ISO 9001:2026 is expected in October 2026. Both bring clearer guidance and moderate changes—not a major overhaul.
The key new items are quality culture in ISO 9001, the new clause 6.3 on change management in ISO 14001, clearer risk/opportunity structure in both standards, and integration of the 2024 climate amendments. The transition period for ISO 14001 is three years (until May 2029). ISO 9001’s transition period will be set later.
Organizations already certified will experience the transition as smooth—especially with a tool that keeps track of what needs to be done.
